Su Bingtian had been the Chinese 100-meter record holder until Tuesday when Xie Zhenye ran 9.97 seconds at the Meeting de Montreuil in France. Xie's record lasted all of three days.

Competing at the Meeting Madrid, a stop on the IAAF World Challenge circuit, Su won the 100 in 9.91. The wind was a legal +0.2m/s. Su's time also equaled the No. 2 time in the world this year, only trailing Mike Rodgers who ran 9.89 in the prelims of the 100 at the USATF Outdoor Championships.

Su entered the competition with a personal-best 9.99, a time he ran twice in 2015. His best this season was 10.05.

Coming off the an indoor season that saw Su capture the silver medal in the 60 meters at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, strong performances were possible. That performance came Friday in Madrid.

Su ran a season's best 10.04 in the 100 prelim, tying for the top spot in the race with Italy's Filippo Tortu. In the other prelim heat, South Africa's Akani Simbine ran the fastest preliminary race in 9.98, a season's best.

Returning to the track just over an hour later, Su won the final over Tortu, who ran a personal-best 9.99, and Simbine, who ran 10.01. Tortu's mark was also an Italian national record.
